KelownaNow is teaming up with HikingAddiction to host the first annual KelownaNow hike. It will include a photo contest with some great prizes, so you’re not going to want to miss it!
There's something about being out in nature that refreshes and relaxes us. Standing on a mountain top is unparalleled in both the beauty of the view and the satisfaction of using nothing but your legs to get you up there. It encourages us to unplug, even if it's just for a few moments, and sit in awe of the natural world.
It’s time to strap on the hiking shoes and get outside! If you’ve been itching to head out on an adventure, but just don't know where to go, this is for you. We’re here to connect young outdoor enthusiasts in the Okanagan, regardless of your experience or fitness level, with a guided hike up Sugarloaf Mountain.
Hosted by Josh Hoggan, founder of local organization HikingAddiction, it is guaranteed to be a fun event full of fresh air and great people. Free to join and no commitment required, HikingAddiction is a group of adults ranging in age from their 20’s to 40’s that provides a platform for both locals and visitors to explore new areas and meet new people with similar interests.
What to bring: Ensure you have proper footwear, water and snacks.
Think you have an eye for photography? Join us on the hike and snap some photos on your phone or camera. Tag #kelownanow and #kelownanowhike on Instagram for your chance to win one of two awesome prizes:
Random Draw: Use the hashtag #kelownanowhike and post a photo from the hike and you will automatically be entered to win an Ikon Adventures helicopter ride for you and two of your friends!
KelownaNow's Choice: Our team here at KelownaNow will have a look at all entries (under the #kelownanowhike tag on Instagram) and choose the photo that best represents the day to win a wireless Bluetooth sound system.
Nestled outbound from busy city life, on the other side of the lake from Sparkling Hill Resort and about 11 km north of Fintry, enjoy the serenity of this breathtaking hike.
As your feet trek across the moss-laden forest floor, allow your senses to embark on a journey of purity as you engulf yourself in fresh mountain air, and the smells of new growth.
As your breath calms, and your heart rate lessens in this natural sanctuary, your peacefulness is abruptly challenged with an incredibly enticing uphill gauntlet.
The double wide path quickly narrows into a meandering single track with the occasional natural obstacle. Halfway up, make a choice at the large rock cairn to either trek right or left to reach the summit to complete the loop.
South-facing vistas of Okanagan Lake and mountain ranges to the west adorn the skyline as you perch yourself on one of many rocky mountain ledges.
